Bethany

My first memory of Beth is probably my most vivid one. Jennie and Neil bought her over to meet me probably in the early part of the summer holidays of 2005. We met at a local restaurant and they put her in my arms and said: “This is Bethany, we’ve already got her a library card, will you be her Godmother?” It was a completely unexpected request. I remember looking down at the gorgeous baby in my arms and feeling this rush of love like nothing I had ever experienced before. Of course I said yes. The picture of Beth in pink was taken that day.  I don’t think I could quite believe that I got to be part of her life and buy her books and receive God mother cards and school photos. Beth grew up and she was always beautiful. I tried to see her as often as possible. At least every holiday. There were summer family trips to London to do the bench trail, the dream jar trail and trips to places like Wisley. After Christmas most years Jennie, Beth, Aidan and I would go and see a show. We saw “the Snowman,” Stickman,” “Potted Panto,” “Slava’s snow show” (which I seem to remember was quite odd.) and most recently “Circus 1903.” When Beth was quite little, before Aidan was born, I went on a Horchover family holiday to Cornwall which is where I think the kangaroo picture was taken. Later on I went on Barber Shop weekends to Bournemouth, Harrogate and Llandudno so that I could look after Bethany and Aidan for part of the weekend. We played crazy golf and went to the park and ate lots. Beth and Aidan were always immaculately behaved so that it was always pleasure to spend time with them. In Harrogate I remember taking Beth back to the apartment we were staying in so that she could get changed for her chorus performance. She changed out of her purple dms into her sparkly outfit and a bit later I was both immensely proud and awed to watch her sing on the stage with the chorus. Most recently I went to Eweleaze Farm with the Horchovers and I remember silly things like all standing round the outdoor sink cleaning our teeth in the dark. My favourite Beth memories are probably times I spent at the Horchovers house playing board games, playing on the Wii and having family meals. There aren’t many people I would do the ice bucket challenge for but Beth was one. As she grew older Beth became interested in very different things to me. Engineering and Formula 1. I will be forever sad that I never got to learn more about those things through her. She will always be a very special and important part of my life!
